A victory and a party; could it get any better? Cinco de Mayo is coming up very soon. Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of the Mexican army victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla. The Mexican army was eventually defeated, but the victory at the Battle of Puebla came to represent a symbol of Mexican unity and patriotism. This victory proved to the world that Mexico and all of Latin America were willing to defend themselves against foreign intervention.
Today, Mexico recognizes Cinco de Mayo by having celebrations that include food, music, and dancing. In the United States, the date is used to celebrate the culture and experiences of Americans of Mexican descent.
As a result this holiday is observed by many Americans not of the Mexican ethnicity. Cities with large populations of Mexican ancestry use this day to celebrate the blending of Mexican and American roots. Many schools across America use Cinco de Mayo as a day to educate their pupils on the historical significance of this day. Whether your Mexican or not, everybody can celebrate Cinco de Mayo. So everybody mark your calendars!
