Sociology

By JJ Backus
Staff Writer

Does anyone know what sociology is? I definitely didn’t before I got into the class. I had heard from previous seniors that it was a fun class, so I took it. If you’re one of those people that just wants a really easy senior year, don’t take this class. You can’t pass it without hard work and studying, since it is an honors class. A good thing about it is the no homework rule. There’s a downfall to that though, nothing but notes, test, and quizzes. So when you need to bring up your grade you just have to wait for another quiz, it can get a little frustrating sometimes.

We learn about a lot of things in sociology:

    Social Classes
    Status Symbols
    Terrorism
    Recidivism
    Media
    And many others

As of right now, we are in the unit of our book about crime. With that, we have been learning about juvenile, violent, and property crimes. Towards the end of March the class is taking a field trip to the County and Federal Court houses.

There is also a big project, for all of us, in the months of April and May. We have to give a huge presentation, and write a term paper. The presentation has to be at least twenty minutes long, and has to be in Power Point. The good thing about it is that it’s a project of choice. You can choose anything you are interested in to do the project on. For example, I’m doing mine on the 70’s. It has a huge variety of things to choose from so I know I’ll be able to make the time.

Sociology isn’t my favorite class, but that’s just my opinion. There are some students that like it and others that don’t. Don’t be swayed away from it by what I’ve said. The class just isn’t for me.

Give it a try, you might like it.
