1994 Season Review

The 1994 season ran from early October to the 13th of May, thus lasting over seven months. Fourteen students were team members at the end of the year. Varsity letters were awarded to Anthony Buecker, Caitlin McLaughlin, Drew Stout (fourth year pin), Calvin Tran (second year pin and captain pin), and Daniel Walters (second year pin). Junior Varsity letters were earned by Eric Lockhart (second year pin), Kevin Marfell (second year pin), Dan McCain (second year pin), Pat Aylward, Travis Bartell, and Kelly Zears. Participation certificates were awarded to Shaun Lewis, Jordan Maricle, and Heather Viggers. In the thirteen varsity and six freshman-sophomore interscholastic competitions, the varsity record was 38 wins and 20 losses, while the frosh-soph record was 9 wins and 13 losses (3 against varsity). The varsity team won the first place trophy at the Indian Valley and Tomahawk Conference tournaments; placed second at the Peoria County tournament; were fourth at Eureka, Aledo, and Br imfield; and won the consolation bracket at Manito. They also won the IHSA Sectional championship for the second year in a row.

The top varsity toss-up question answerer was Drew Stout with 252 toss-up questions answered. This is a new team record. Drew was named to five all-tournament teams. Dan Walters was second with 85 varsity and 27 F/S correct answers. Calvin Tran with 64, Anthony Buecker with 29, Caitlin McLaughlin with 13 (plus 35 F/S), and Travis Bartell with 5, Eric Lockart with 3 (plus 20 F/S), Kevin Marfell with 3 (plus 4 F/S), Kelly Zears with 2 (plus 5 F/S), Pat Aylward with 2 (plus 4 F/S), and Dan McCain with 2 (plus 25 F/S) rounded out the toss-up answerers. The team as a whole answered a record 479 questions for an 8.4 answers per quiz average. This also established a new team record, surpassing the 7.7 of 1993.

Peoria Heights again hosted the (sixth annual) Casimir Pulaski Day mini-tournament on the first Monday in March. Brimfield won first place in both the varsity and frosh-soph divisions this year. We also hosted a frosh-soph tournament this year. Tremont was first and PHHS was second. Thanks to the following staff and parents who assisted: Richard Bartell, Roger Bergia, Rich Henz, Sue Miller, Jerry Crumrine, Tom Gamboe, Bobbi Grafton, Paul and Carolyn McLaughlin, Brian and Pati Heller, Dale Stout, John Borland, Sue Stella, Anita Glisan, and Linda Maricle. Volunteers are welcome for the 1995 Casimir Pulaski tournament March 6th form 9:00 a.m. until noon.
