2000 Season Review

   The Peoria Heights High School scholastic bowl team won the Prairieland Conference championship with a 19-2 record. Havana, Abingdon, and Cuba were second with 13-8 records followed by Lewistown, Elmwood, BPC, and Astoria. The conference contests were held over seven dates with three quizzes each evening. This is the fifth year in a row Peoria Heights has won the Prairieland Conference championship and the tenth conference championship won since 1990.

   All conference medallions were awarded to Stephen Woo (11) of Peoria Heights with 91 toss-up questions answered. Katy Hardy (10) of Cuba was second with 89. Kevin Wendzel (12) of Abingdon was third with 75. David Mast (11) answered 30 toss-up questions for the 11th spot while Ben Walbert (11) answered 26 for 13th during the conference season. Other Heights students answering included Rob Bunting, Ryan DeLong, Jeff Chase, David Lewis, and Ian Munk.

   Peoria Heights won the varsity competition at its 12th annual Casimir Pulaski Day tournament. Other schools participating were Brimfield, Orion, and Princeville. The team placed first at the twenty-four team Princeville tournament and third at the thirty-two team Aledo tournament. PHHS was fourth at the thirty-two team River City tournament and first in the initial Peoria area fall league of four schools.

   Stephen Woo was awarded all-tournament honors at the County, River City, and ICC tournaments. Ben Walbert received all-tournament medallion at the Princeville tournament.

   Team leader in toss-ups answered was junior and team captain Stephen Woo with 249 followed by junior Ben Walbert with 103.
